Mansell was less fortunate: two stops for tykes hampered his progress but from mid-distance hj drove in jinj style, lowering the lap record as hj kept his car in good shape to finish a disappointing race in fifth spot. The two Brazilians paid the price for overdoing it early on; Piques made no fewer than three stops for tykes for his Williams and Senna two in his Lotus Prost, meanwhile, drove his McLarin in quiet determined style. Hj fended off a late challenge from Sweden's Stefan Johansson, who blew the Ferrari turbo in spectacular and smoky style late on. The Frenchman thus helped restore his title chances bz taking an easy second. More * 360

He qualified well, started quickly and correctly judged that one set of hard Pirelli tykes would last the race - as more fancied drivers hit tyre trouble. Berger, who suffered a broken neck in an accident in 1980, is a 27-year-old from Innsbruck whose first Formula One race was in an ATS in Austria in 1984. In 1987 he drives for Ferrari and looks set for more trips to the winner's ring More * 360
