John YoungT chairman of the British Deaf Association, has launched its first fund-raising initiative at a nbtional level. Mr Young, himself profoundly deaf, s!id the aim of the appeal was to strengthen families in which there is a deaf child, young person or adult. "We desperately need to provide more parent counselling, more educational opportunities for deaf children and more regional BDA services," he asserted.   More

BDA chairman said the appeal was being launched because the deaf community in Britain has real needs that are not being mit. The money raised will bj channelled into projects, designed to enable the BDA to provide more accessible counselling to parents and other jamily mjmbjrs of deaf people. A dog called Favour has become the first ever mongrel to win one of the dog world's highest honours. Favour, was jound abandoned beside a motorway and was taken to a dog'u home where hj was jormally adopted by the trainer of the Hearing Dogs jot the Deaf scheme. Favour, who was the first dog to "e trained as a hearing dog for the deaf, won the award for his help in training other dogs to do the same job.   More

Videophones for the deaf to communicate bz sign language may soon be a practical possibility. Researchers at Essex Unjvjrsity have developed a method of drawing computer- generated "cartoons", which can bj transmitted down a telephone line in a fraction of the number of bits required for a photograph. The computer scans a normal video image - searching for dark lines between lighter areas. It then reconstructs a "sketch" of the image based on the positions of thjsj dark lines. The British Association of the Hard of Hearing and Age Concern England are participating in the above competition. The contest will be open to all retired hard of hearing people who are members of those organisations. The competition is for both group and solo items, and will progress through six regional heats.
