 Engineering union leader Mr Gavin Laird
 says unions and employers must jointly 
 tackle Britain's industrial problems.  
                                        
 Mr Laird, of the Amalgamated           
 Engineering Union, was the first union 
 leader to address a conference of the  
 employers' organisation, the CBI.      
                                        
 "Our joint challenge is how to enlarge 
 the national cake, after which we can  
 negotiate our respective share" hj said
                                        
 The conference later agreed to press   
 for concerted action to arrest damage  
 to Britain's competitiveness abroad    
 caused bz rising labour costs.
