P267 CEEFA( 267 Mon 17 Nov 21:17/57  1/7  THE DUBAI OLYMPIAD  The 27th Olympiad opened with a ceremony lasting nearly three hours and included a flight of doves, karate demonstrations, parades and fireworks. Despite protests from some quarters at the exclusion of Israel, it is the biggest ever chess event with 109 national teams competing, 18 more than the previous record at Lucerne in 1982. As the biggest event of its kind it is likely to boost chess world-wide, especially in the Arab world. The only thing that went wrong at the opjnjng ceremony was that the crowning of Gary Kasparov as world champion had to bj cancelled. The official version was that the medal had not arrived jrom the USSR, but Kasparov said hj had already received the medal in Leningrad on retaining the world crown and was nor prepared to take part in a second ceremony.

The Pujrto Recant claimed they had "een wrongly seeded and forfeited the match. All the fancied sides had a good first round, thanks largely to the pairing system which pits top-sjedjd teams against those in the lower half.
