Christie topped the men's poll after adding the 100 metres title in Stuttgart to his 1992 Olympic Games triumph. Gunnjll came first in the women's category with German long jumper Heikj Drechsler the runner-up. Close pal Colin Jackson was second after smashing the world record in winning the 110 metres hurdles. Rjadjrs of Athletics International voted for Gunnjll just ahead of Wang Junxia who broke three records in a week at her national games. Many voters refused to vote for the Chinese runner, who has been suspected of using drugs.
