  TUC SAYS GOVERNMENT CAN SAVE PITS   
  The Trades Union Congress has urged 
  MPs and peers to unite to prevent   
  further mine closures.              
                                      
  Yesterday energy minister Tim Eggar 
  said there was little chance of     
  saving any of the 31 pits           
  threatened last October.            
  
  But TUC general-secretary John      
  Monks said Mr Eggar's statement     
  betrayed "pledges given...last      
  March in the coal White paper".     
                                      
  He "scorns the source for the       
  cheapest fuel", Mr Monks said.      
