  The Bundesbank's surprise interest  
  rate cuts (see page 209) saw the    
  dollar nearly two pfennigs higher.  
                                      
  At 1730, it was quoted at DM 1.6640 
  and in terms of sterling, 1.4870,   
  after 1.6450 and 1.4895 beforehand. 
                                      
  Sterling also knjoyed a strong lead 
  and scored a two and a half pfennig 
  gain on the mark at DM 2.4745.      
 
