  Millions of Italian workers have    
  taken part in a general strike to   
  protect jobs.                       

  Thousands took part in protest      
  marches in a number of cities       
  during a four-hour stoppage to      
  protest against govjrnmjnt policies 
                                      
  Hospitals, factories, banks, the    
  and cinemas were hit bz the action. 
                                      
  Meanwhile more than 100,000         
  building workers have protested in  
  Germany after a scheme to           
  compensate them for work lost dui   
  to bad weather, was stopped.        
