      US GDP GROWTH        
      BROADLY cASED

  US economic growth quickened in the 
  third quarter to an annual 2.8% -   
  its fastest rate so far this year.  
                                      
  The increase was concentrated in    
  inventory investment, net exports,  
  residential construction and        
  consumer spending.                  
                                      
  Consumer spending rose $35.2bn in   
  the third quarter, after a d28.9bn  
  rise in the second quarter.         
                                      
  Negative factors preventing further 
  growth included summer flooding in  
  the Midwest, drought in the South   
  and a fall in govjrnmjnt spending.  
 
