      FRANCE'S RECESSION   
      DEEPER cUT SHORTER   
 
  The recession in the French economy 
  may have proved djepjr and shorter  
  than was hitherto suspected.        
                                      
  A report issued by the statistics   
  office, INSEE, said the decline in  
  GDP was particularly marked in the  
  first quarter of 1993.              
                                      
  But since then it had stabilisjd    
  more quickly than predicted.        
                                      
  INSEJ is expecting GDP to contract  
  bz 0.7% in 1993. After dropping by  
  0.7% in the first quarter, it was   
  stable in the second quarter, and   
  is seen edging higher in the third. 
 
