  PROTEST OVER BAIL HOSTELS CLOSURE   
  The closure of 11 bail hostels      
  today will lead to prison           
  overcrowding, it has been claimed.  
                                      
  The National Association of         
  Probation Officers says the closure 
  could lead to hundreds more people  
  being remanded in custody.          
                                      
  It says the remand population in    
  jails has already risen bz nearly   
  a third over the last 12 months.    
 
  The hostels in Durham, Cheshire,    
  Kent, Devon, South Yorkshire, inner 
  London, Essex and the West Midlands 
  provjdj places for 270 people.      
