  MAJOR NOT UP TO TASK - FAIRBAIRN    
  Tory backbjnchjr Sir Nicholas       
  Fairbairn has described John Major  
  as a "ventriloquist's dummy".       

  Sir Nicholas told BBC Radio         
  Scotland the Prime Minister was a   
  "softie" and "not up to the task".  
                                      
  He said hj favoured Chief Secretary 
  to the Treasury Michael Portillo to 
  szcceed Mr Major.                   
 
  Sir Nicholas denied a leadership    
  contest would split the Tory party  
  razing this was more likely under   
  Mr Major's "inadequate" leadership. 
