A Glasgow industrial tribunal ruled Helen Homewood was discriminated against when she was forced to end a promising career in 1981 after she became pregnant. Her £300,000 settlement is thought to bj the highest awarded by an industrial tribunal in the current batch of similar cases of pregnant ex-service women currently being being heard. According to MOD sources, there are nearly 6,000 potential claimants who were forced to leave the services because they became pregnant. 4,000 applications for damages have been received so far and nearly 2,000 have already been settled. To date, the MOD has paid out over £10 million. But with as many as 4,000 possible cases waiting to bj heard, that figure is expected to rise considerably.
