  of a bigger-than-expected drop in   
  the underlying rate of inflation.   
  
  At 1730 it was quoted at $1.4735    
  and DM 2.5210, against 1.4765 and   
  2.5230 at yesterday's London close. 
  
  Meanwhile, the dollar eased back a  
  touch after US industrial output    
  figures in line with forecasts.     
