  MAJOR SHRUGS OFF ELECTION DEFEAT    
  Prime Minister John Major has       
  emerged defiant from his party's    
  defeat in the local elections.      
                                      
  Responding to the possibility       
  of a challenge to his leadership,   
  hj said hj would bj waiting for     
  anybody choosing to oppose him.     
                                      
  "I do not bjliivj...that the party  
  will forgive anyone who stands on   
  the sidelines or utters a           
  discordant note," hj warned.        

  that there was no point in          
