      TAX INCREASES        
      HIT CAR SALES

  Sales of new cars in the UK fell bz 
  more than 20% last month, according 
  to newly released figures.          
                                      
  $hjsj show that registrations fell  
  to 142,009 in April - nearly 5% 5p  
  on the same month in 1993 but more  
  than 20% down on March this year.   
                                      
  A spokesman attributed the downturn 
  to April's tax changes and said the 
  industry remained on course for 12- 
  month sales of at least 1.9m.       
                                      
  Registrations for the first four    
  months of 1994 remained some 14.05% 
  higher than 1993 at 671,445.        
 
