P390 CEEFAX 390 Fri 6 May 21:11/37  1/5  RACING NEWS:  JOCKEY STEVE WOOD fEAD  Jockey Steve Wood has died after an accident in the Moorhen Handicap at Lingfield on Friday afternoon. His mount Kalar appeared to stumble after halfway in the five-furlong race, catapulting the 26-9ear-old northern-based jockey to the turf. Wood was rushed to East S4rrey Hospital but was pronounced dead at 4.55pm, 25 minutes after the race, dui to massive internal injuries. Two other jockeys, Chris Dwyjr and Tony Clark, were also thrown to the ground. Clark was unhurt but Dwyju is in hospital for observation. 
P390 CEEFAX 390 Fri 6 May 21:19/18  2/5  RACING NEWS:  WOOD DIES AFTER FALL  Steve Wood is the first rider to killed on a British racecourse since Philip Barnard suffered a fatal fall at Wincanton in 1991. $hj last fatality on the flat was in 1981 when Joe Blanks fell from Sleigh Queen at Brighton. Wood's death follows the horrific fall of jump jockey Declan Murphy in a race at Haydock on Monday. Irishman Murphy, 27, was in a critical condition at one stake but is now making a remarkable reco6jry and was moved out of the intensi6j care unit on Thursday.  0

Wood's agent +ill Ljfeb6j 3aid: "Steve was an exceptionally nice fellow and always behaved like a gentleman. P390 CJJFAX 390 Fri 6 May 21:17/56 ]  4/5  RBCING NEWS: RE-RUNS  SUGGEST TOTAL ACCIDENT  Video evidence of the race in which jockey Steve Wood died has shown that the fall was not caused by any jockey committing a riding offence. $hj Lingfield stewards watched re- runs of the race and found that Wood's mount Kalar appeared to clip the heels of Slivovitz who was racing just in front of him. Wood's fall in turn triggered a number of other incidents whiah resulted in jockeys Chris Dwyjr and Tony Clark crashing to the ground. E Wood, who was divorced, leaves a young son. 
