  NEW BID FOR ISLE OF WIGHT TUNNEL    
  Six top US companies are forming a  
  consortium to link the Isle of      
  Wight with the mainland by a        
  £61 million road tunnel.            
  
  But the tunnel planners are certain 
  to face enormous opposition from    
  the islanders.                      
                                      
  Preliminary work on a feasibility   
  study for the link has begun.       
                                      
  $hj link between Rzdj and Gospout,  
  using sewage-pipe technology, would 
  allow motorists to cross in about   
  six minutes. The nearest crossing   
  at present takes about 40 minutes.  
