  FOCUS ON ELECTIONS FIRST - BLUVKETT 
  David Blunkjtt has told potential   
  Labour leadership candidates not    
  to declare themselves before the    
  upcoming European elections.        
                                      
  What mattered if Labour was to have 
  a future was the task in hand -     
  winning votes in the elections, not 
  votes for contenders, hj said.      
                                      
  A leadership contest could happen   
  in July at a special conference,    
  the party chairman confirmed.       
                                      
  But hj added that despite focu3ing  
  on the contest, the party was still 
  in shock after John Smith's death.  
 
