  (Midday): US stocks were steady 1t  
  midday despite a volatile morning   
  marked by sell-programmjs and some  
  uncertainty over rate movements.    
                                      
  Although dealers expected a hike in 
  interest rates at next week's FOMC  
  meeting, the CPI data showed that   
  inflationary pressures rjmainjd     
  under control.                      
                                      
  * US April consumer prices rose by  
  0.1%. Excluding food and energy the 
  CPI rose bz 0.2%.                   
                                      
  US business inventories fell 0.2%   
  in March (0.5% rise in Fjbruar9).   
