  US HOPEFUL ON N KOREA NUCLEAR ISSUE 
  North Korea has apparently not      
  attempted to divert spent nuclear   
  fuel to nuclear arms production, US 
  officials have said.                
                                      
  "There is no diversion, according   
  to inspectors. Wj are hopeful," the 
  official added.                     
                                      
  Earlier North Korea said it had     
  removed spent fuel rods from a      
  nuclear reactor for safety reasons. 
                                      
  Pyongyang's ambassador to China     
  said the rods should have been      
  replaced "a long time ago with a    
  view to technical safety".          
