      SOCIETIES' LENDING   
      SHOWS 16% FALL-OFF

  Building societies' new commitments 
  to lind fell 16% between March and  
  April.                              
                                      
  Industry figures show that net new  
  commitments fell to some £3.14bn in 
  April, although this represents a   
  year-on-year fall of only 1.2%.     
                                      
  Taking the two months of March and  
  April together, net new commitments 
  were 10% above year-earlier levels. 
                                      
  Net receipts fell heavily in April, 
  by 8.8% to some £10.95bn.           
                                      
  A year ago they came to £11.39bn.   
