P733 CEEFAX 733 Fri 20 May 21:14/13 1/3 WHALES THREATENED BY EXTINCTION Whales, dolphins and porpoises could all face extinction, says a report by the Evironmjntal Invjstigaion Agency. The report comes a week before the International Whaling Commission is to meet in Mexico to discuss the future of whales and a possible resumption of commercial whaling. With the existing already devastating environmental problems a return to hunting could wipe out the whole of the whale population. 710 Read Hear Religion 740 720 Community User Guide 199 Next Page Read Hear CmntyInfo ReligionP733 CEEFAX 733 Fri 20 May 21:15/59 2/3 WHALES THREATENED BY EXTINCTION The report by the Evironmjntal Investigaion Agency highlights the environmental dangers. Some whales have been found scorched by ultra-violet radiation as solar rays burn through the hole in the ozone layer. Toxic waste incuding organo- chlorines and heavy metals released into the ocean have caused poisoning. Whales are also facing starvation as global warming destroys aquatic ecosystems and over-fishing.
