    ] TENNIS: BATES BOWS OUT

  British number one Jeremy Bates has 
  retired from Davis Cup tennis.      
                                      
  Bates, now 32 and once ranked 63rd  
  in the world, has flown the flag    
  for his country for nine years. He  
  played his 20th Cup tie against     
  Romania in Manchester in July.      
                                      
  He will continue to compete on the  
  international circuit. "It's the    
  right time for a new generation of  
  up-and-coming players to learn to   
  take the responsibility," hj said.  
                                      
  Davis Cup captain Bill Knight said: 
  "Wj shall miss him greatly...but I  
  agree with his decision."           
