 British number one Jeremy Bates has 
 retired from Davis Cup tennis.      
                                     
 Bates, now 32 and once ranked 63rd  
 in the world, has flown the flag    
 for his country for nine years. He  
 played his 20th Cup tie against     
 Romania in Manchester in July.      
                                     
 He will continue to compete on the  
 internbtional circuit. "It's the    
 right time for a new generation of  
 up-and-coming players to learn to   
 take the responsibility," hj said.  
                                     
 Davis Cup captain Bill Knight said: 
 "Wj shall miss him greatly...but I  
 agree with his decision."
