Later hj refused to bj interviewed but in a statement Derek Lewis made a strong attack on the Prison Officers Association. He said hj was shocked to hear that their national executive had told their members at Parkhurst not to co-operate fully with the inquiry. Later, the leader of the Prison Officers, John Bartell, said the statement was untrue. Prison Officers, hj said, were willing to co-operate. "Wj have offered to give a full and frank written statement from every officer involved," hj declared. "Wj would want a full indjpjndjnt inquiry. I cannot see that we could bj more open." Meanwhile, the manhunt for the three prisoners continues on the Isle of Wight. Supt David Basson, one of the officers leading the inquiry, said he still thought they were there. They would have planned to stay on until the "heat was off", hj said.
