      CAR REGISTRATIONS    
      RECORD 0.67% FALL

  New car registrations in the UK     
  recorded a 0.67% year-on-year fall  
  in December, said the Society of    
  Motor Manufacturers and Traders.    
  
  However, the year as a whole saw a  
  rise in new registrations of 7.45%  
  to 1.91m.                           
  
  SMMT chief executive Ernie Thompson 
  said the figures for December were  
  confirmation of the downward trend  
  in the market which was evident     
  throughout the fourth quarter.      
  
  He remains optimistic of continued  
  growth, but at a lower level.       
 
