  The dollar remained sharply firmer  
  after a robust set of US employment 
  figures for December.               
  
  At 1715, it was quoted at DM 1.5605 
  and, in terms of sterling, $1.5520, 
  after 1.5505 and 1.5635 overnight.  
                                      
  Dealers said that strong growth was 
  evident in the US economy and a     
  rate rise was anticipated bz many.  
