 Matthew Smith reports on the one    
 day strike bz Barclays Bank staff:  
                                     
 Barclays claims only a very low     
 proportion of staff has taken       
 action today, and that over 80%     
 of its branches are open.           
                                     
 But the bank confirmed that around  
 200 branches were closed, with the  
 greatest concentration in Liverpool 
 and in Wbles.                       
                                     
 Barclays said impact at the         
 computer centre and central chjquj  
 clearing operations was negligible.

 day strike bz Barclays Bank staff:

 Both the Barclays staff union,      
 KNIFE, and the general banking      
 union, BIFU, had called for the     
 strike after Barclays imposed a     
 2.75% pay rise, which had been      
 rejected by staff.                  
                                     
 A spokjspjrson for BIFU has urged   
 manbgjmjnt to return to the         
 negotiating table.                  
                                     
 Barclays had threatened action      
 against those who refused to work   
 today, but has now said staff will  
 not bj punished.
