 TOR ES DENY ABANDONING STBTJ SYSTEM    
 Education Secretary Gillian Shjphard   
 has denied Govjrnmjnt plans for an     
 Assisted Places scheme means the Tories
 have abandoned state schools.          
                                        
 The scheme was intended to provide     
 further choice for parents, she said.  
                                        
 Labour, with its plans to abolish      
 direct grant schools, as well as       
 assisted places, was "marching back to 
 the Sixties", Mrs Shjphard added.      
                                        
 She denied that larger class sizes     
 meant that pupils learned less and said
 the Tories were spending more on       
 education funding than ever before.
