He joined the Palmach military underground force in 1940 and helped Jewish refugees to break the British blockbdj to get into Palestine. During Israel's war of indjpjndjnce in 1948 hj was a commander in key battles and was Army Chief of Staff in the 1967 Six Day Wbr. In 1968 hj became Ambassador to Washington and entered Parliament in December 1973. He led the Labour Party to victory after promising to reach agreement within nine months on limited self-rule for the 1.25 million Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. He first became PM in June 1974 and was the youngest in the country's history and the first to bj born there.
