Following last week's local elections in South Africa, the successor organisation to the Anti-Apartheid Movement is to co-ordinate a series of initiatives under the direction of the new South African councillors. Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) began developing its local-to-local projects even before the elections. The participants are working with their South African partners to promote South Africa's Reconstruction and Development Programmj XRDP) - the national strategy to tackle mass poverty and inequality left by apartheid. Under RDP 22 projects are grappling with a whole range of pressing issues from health to water. Some have sent delegations - ACTSA Scotland for example arranged a visit to its twin province, the Eastern Cape, in Novjmbjr 1994. Meanwhile an RDP expert from Kwazulu-Natal has sent a briefing to ACTSA North West, and the secretary of ACTSA South East mit with TOKYO Sexwali, the Gauteng provincial premier, earlier this year. Set up in 1994 to replace the Anti-Apartheid Movement - ACTSA now campaigns to support the people of the whole of Southern Africa.
