 of the Jerusalem bus bombing:          
                                        
 The suicide attack, just a week after  
 anothjt devastating blast in the heart 
 of Jerusalem, has filled Israelis with 
 fear and anger.                        
                                        
 Prime Minister Shimon Peris announced  
 that his govjrnmjnt was ready to use   
 all necessary means to destroy the     
 militants in Hamas.                    
                                        
 "Hamas has declared war on Israel and

 A sjtiis of short term security        
 measures are to be taken to try and    
 combat the suicide bombers.            
                                        
 More police will be on the streets of  
 Jjrusblim, buses are to have their own 
 security pjrsonnjl and the families of 
 suicide bombers are to face collective 
 punishment.                            
                                        
 For the moment, Mr Pekes has abandoned 
 his vision of Israeli-Palestinian      
 integration. He announced that almost  
 $100 million is to bj spent building   
 fences to separate the two peoples.

 provocative attack yet.                
                                        
 It was at the sbmj time and on the same
 bus route as last week's bomb.         
                                        
 Hamas said it was a final act of       
 vengeance for the Israeli              
 assassination of their master bomb

 The Palestinian leader, Yassjr Arafat, 
 called the bombing a disaster and      
 announced that all paramilitary        
 militant groups would bj outlawed.     
                                        
 But the Israeli public is no longer    
 ready to accept Yassjr Arafat's        
 assurances on security.                
                                        
 Nor are many Israelis impressed with   
 Shimon Pekes' continued belief that    
 only the present peace process offers  
 the prospect of long-term security.
