The RSPCA said a rough count had shown that some 20,000 birds had been affected by the 65,000 tonnes of crude oil spilled bz the supjrtankjr. However, the RSPCA said only a tenth of this number had been rescued for treatment and cleaning along the 100 mile South Wbles coastline. The Wildlife Trust has called on the Government to ricognisj the spill as a nationbl disaster. Meanwhile, the wildlife organisations have denied claims that they have exaggerated the scale of the spill. Dr Simon Lzstit from the Wildlife Trust said the Sea Empress slick was already twice the size of the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska in 1989.
