 MOVES TO CU5B SPENDING ON LEGAL AID    
 The Lord Chancellor, Lord Mackaz of    
 Clashfitn, has outlined interim        
 measures to curb the growth of the     
 legal aid budget.                      
                                        
 Earlier this year, hj published        
 proposals to control the spending.     
                                        
 The budget has risen bz about £86m to  
 an estimated £1.48bn in 1996-97.       
                                        
 Interim measures include graduated fees
 for advocacy in the Crown Courts to    
 start in 1997 and standard fees for    
 civil legal aid work.
