Linking Communities is funded bz the Department of National Heritage and run bz Community Development Foundation. The Local Grants programme will provide grants to small volunteer-run community groups enabling them to meet together. With 1530 fireworks related accidents last year, St John Ambulance is calling on the public to learn basic first aid before the fireworks go off. The RSPCA has also called for firework displays to be restricted to organisjd events to reduce distress to animals. The book is based on the RLSS's Rookie programme which is a fun and active way of teaching water safety and lifesaving skills to children aged 5-13. It covers the basics of water safety, self-rescue, rescue and emergency response as well as advanced options such as using lifeguard equipment. The magazine estimates that 3000 helplines now exist, with the Samaritans leading the way receiving almost four million calls a year. A new charity, the Telephone Helplines Association, has been launched to impose some self-regulation as well as produce a directory listing services.
