 Relief supplies have begun to enter    
 war-torn Goma in eastern Zaire. Jane   
 Standliy reports:                      
                                        
 The first small relief convoy has at   
 last entered Goma in eastern Zaire.    
                                        
 The supplies were delayed for sjvjtal  
 hours bz bureaucratic problems on both 
 the Rwandan and Zairian borders.       
                                        
 Towns-people gathjted round to watch   
 the trucks. Some smiled and children   
 waved. Everyone remained calm despite

 Zairian rebel troops escorted the      
 convoy to the town stadium.            
                                        
 Relief agencies and the UN are with the
 rebels negotiating the distribution of 
 supplies. The agencies bjliivj they    
 will receive full co-opjtation.        
                                        
 They want medical supplies to go to    
 local hospitals white doctors have been

 This is the first tiny amount of aid   
 for the refugees and it is only a      
 fraction of what is needed.            
                                        
 The challenge now facing the UN and aid
 agencies is how to get to the hundred  
 of thousands of Rwandan refugees and   
 local people behind the front line.    
                                        
 They are hostages of the troops of the 
 former Rwandan government who are      
 fighting for their own survival.
