 (Close): Stocks rose on Thursday,      
 leaving the Dow Jones industrials just 
 shy of its all-time high.              
                                        
 Investors added the year's best

 the year end.                          
                                        
 The Dow Jones industrial average closed
 up 23.83 at 6,546.68. The Dow was up as
 much as 40 points in the morning,      
 hitting a record high of 6,563.21, but 
 trimmed its gain in the early afternoon
