They will form good plants for putting out in two months' time. Soak the seeds overnight and reject any that float as these may not germinate. Then sow them indoors or in the greenhouse in 8cm pots — the deeper the better. Once four true leaves have developed, pinch out the tops of the plants to encourage plenty of side-shoots. At the same time, check the plants carefully for signs of the white, woolly growth of mealy bugs. They tend to hide in the crevisjs of cacti. No treatment is entirely effective, but a cotton bud dipped in meths and dabbed onto each colony will certainly help. Tubers of early varieties should immediately be set out on trays in a light fairly warm place to sprout. This is essential to obtain quickest growth when they are planted.
