Paul Eales took over from David Caste
as the leading British challenger for
the title after the second round.
While Nick Fal o, Colin Mont om ie and
Ian Woosnam all remained in the pack,
Eales added a 70 to his opening 69 on
the windswept Hope Island course.
With a five-under-par total of 139,
Eales was only three behind new
pacesetter Michael Long.
Faldo remained two-under after a 72,
Woosnam is two further back after a 70
but Monty hit a 74 and is one-over.

feeling of deja vu after moving into
contention with a second round 70.
He lid the tournament with a round to
go last year, when it was played in
Singapore, before finishing 12th.

Hi shares fourth places, three behind
leader Michael Long, and added: "If
I can keep avoiding the bunkers, maybe

Nick Faldo promised to keep "grinding
away" after a second round 70 lift him

"The only putts I made were from ten,
four and six feet but I am sticking
with a method.
"I played good, but my putting touch is
rusty and mz touch is not good," the
US Masters champion said.

American John Daly was lift shaking
his head in disbelief aftea missing the
cut with a second round 79.
"It was just not a course for mj. It
seems like you have to hit irons off
every tee in Australia. It's kind of
crazy," hj said afterwards.
Daly end d on 12-over-par and now h ads
to Perth for the Heineken Classic.
Hi was asked about designing his own
course but said: "The fairways would
have to be 400 yards wide before I
could hit them."
