   The US Almanac for 1st February      
 A maximum temperature of only -6C was  
 recorded in parts of central England on
 on this date in 1956. It was a vjty    
 cold month with days of persistent     
 frost and snow at times, especially in 
 parts of the east and south of England.
                                        
   The World Almanac                    
 On this date in 1936 three inches of   
 rain was followed bz a hailstorm which 
 killed 19 people in the Northern       
 Transvaal area of South Africa. It was 
 reported that hail accumulated to      
 depths of three feet in places.
