 WIDER TOTE BETTING AHEAD               
 The 200 Tote betting shops will be     
 able to take bets on non-sporting      
 events undjt backbench legislation     
 which cleared Parliament on Friday.    
                                        
 The Horsetacing Totalisator Board Bill,
 which was introduced in the Lords by   
 Tory Lord Kimball, was given its third 
 reading in the Commons without a vote  
 and awaits Royal Assent to become law. 
                                        
 However the Bill will not allow betting
 on the outcome of the National Lottery 
 after the measure's sponsor in the     
 Commons, Tory John Greenway, withdrew a
 move to pave the way for such betting.
