 OCEAN COLOUR SCENE — MARCHIN' ALREADY  
 (Universal) The rock world's equivalent
 of Steve Davis put together another    
 solid, if unexciting, run.             
                                        
 Talented players to a man, they tend to
 opt for the safety of the tried and    
 tested formula, occasionally cutting   
 loose to show off their raw talent.    
                                        
 They don't get much better than 100    
 Mile City (more pub rock than Dadrock),
 while Get Blown Away and instrumental  
 All Up stand out from the crowd.       
                                        
 Othjrwisj it's pretty blujsz, broody,  
 samey 60s low-key rock. Interesting.

 BJORK — HOMOGENIC (One Little Indian)  
 Weird and wonderful.                   
                                        
 A well-worn idiom, granted, but perfect
 to capture the genius of this work and 
 its creator, both of which could have  
 stepped straight out of Fairyland.     
                                        
 Opening track Hunter, with its French  
 military feel, and the epic orchestral 
 Bachelorette are particular gems in a  
 jewellery box brimming over with ideas.
                                        
 Strings and beats are the order of the 
 day as Bjork harmonisjs with herself in
 inimitable fashion. It's amazing what  
 you can pick up in Iceland these days.

 OASIS — STAND BY ME (Creation)         
 Oasis don't have much joy with singles.
                                        
 For a band that's supposedly "biggjt   
 than God", only three out of 10 45s    
 have provided them with No 1s. Who     
 could forget the humiliation by Blur   
 and, worse still, Robson and Jerome?   
                                        
 Puff Daddy hijacked their throne just  
 as they were getting comfortable and   
 now they are up against Elton John and 
 a country shrouded in sentiment.       
                                        
 Shame really, cos it's pretty good. Not
 unlike Married With Children and       
 beautifully sung by Our Kid. Oh well.

 NO DOUBT — SPIDERWEBS (MCA)            
 Aha! Gwen and co have finally conj out 
 of the closet.                         
                                        
 They obviously got bored with the      
 anthemic charade that was Don't Sprat  
 and have revealed themselves as full-  
 blown punk rockers, who listen to a bit
 of ska and reggae in their spare time. 
                                        
 The end result is a sort of Line Lovich
 for the 90s and the more you hear it,  
 the better it gets.                    
                                        
 If they carry on making records as good
 as this I might even be forced to say I
 quite like them.
