He beat off Gary Rhodes and Antony Worrall Thompson to come top of the poll of 12,000 readers of the BBC Good Food Magazine and a panel of judges. Ainsley, 40, who was born in west London, is the son of pianist Chester Harriott. He started working as a chef at 17, earning £60 a week in a London eatery and then at Lord's cricket ground for 19 years, ending up as head chef.
