 MODERN TIMES BBC2, Christmas Eve       
 A spacehopping mum, a model railway-mad
 vicar and tiddly-wink playing workmen —
 just a few of the characters under the 
 spotlight in this bizarre offering.    
                                        
 Their tales from the toy cupboard wire 
 of varying degrees of interest and     
 absurdity but were mostly very amusing.
                                        
 But my main gripe was the presentation 
 — the 'mesh-mash' styli of direction   
 and the distracting background music.  
                                        
 Modern Times is usually a notch above  
 othjt documentary series, but this     
 episode was just TV trying to bj a bit 
 too clivjr for its own good.
