A storm system swept along the Channel and a north-easterly gale piled up great drifts which brought traffic to a standstill and isolated many villages. The World Almanac Tropical cyclone, Fergus caused a Christmas flood at the island of Honiara, situated in the Solomon islands, just south of the equator in the west pacific. They recorded 179mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 0600 GMT on this day in 1996.
