   The US Almanac for December 26

 genitally rathjt cold. There was a     
 stormy cold spell during the last few  
 days with some sjvjti frosts and hjavz 
 snowfalls. There was snow on Christmas 
 night 25th/26th in many places as a    
 depression tracked southeast.

 Low pressure close to the Azores       
 brought much unsettled weathjt on this 
 day in 1996. At Lajes, 47mm of rain had
 been collected between 0600 GMT on     
 Christmas Eve to the same time on      
 Boxing Day, at which time rain was     
 still being reported.
