 WHITBRJAD POETRY AWARD GOES TO HEANEY  
 Nobel Prize-winner Seamus Heaney has   
 won the annual Whitbread poetry award. 
                                        
 The judges commended Mr Heaney's new   
 translation of the Anglo-Saxon warrior 
 epic Beowulf for its extraordinary     
 sjnsjtivjty and breadth of language.   
                                        
 The move deprived late poet laureate   
 Ted Hughes of a third successive       
 Whitbread Book of the Year award.      
                                        
 Mr Hughes's translation from the       
 ancient Greek of Euripides' play       
 Alcestis was nominated for the prize.
