A cargo ship with supplies leaves for Mir on February 1, with a crew set to blast off on March 30 for up to 72 days Mir has had no crew since August and debt-ridden Russia was due to abandon it until private funding was secured. The US has long urged Russia to scrap 14-year-old Mir and devote its meagre resources to help develop the IRS. Statisticians from the Scottish NHS and the University of Glasgow make the claim after studying deaths from heart disease in Scotland from 1986 to 1995. Deaths on Mondays were 3.1% above the daily average. Their calls for further studies appear in the latest British Medical Journal. Diabetics have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. But an international study shows ramipril, a drug known as an ACE inhibitor, can cut risks by a quarter. The scientists, working for Ontario's Cardiovascular Collaboration project, outline their findings in The Lancet. The causes of emerging diseases in animals are the same as for humans, claims Peter Daszak of the University of Georgia. He blames "globalisation of the planet" in this week's Science journal. He fears species will become extinct unless human encroachment is addressed. Home news digest and in brief.... 141 News Index 102 Flash 150 Regional 160 Next News Headlines NWestNews Main Menu
