He will take charge for the opening Six Nations clash at home to France. Coach Graham Henry is understood to have felt the time was right for a change, despite Howley leading Wales to 10 wins in their last 12 Tests. Cardiff skipper Young spent six years in rugby league with Leeds and Salford and won 13 Welsh rugby league caps. He made his union debut for Wales as a 19-year-old in the 1987 World Cup. In appointing David Young as successor to Howley, Henry said: "I have the utmost respect for Rob. He was a vital part of our success last year. "I think the captaincy was hindering his performance for Wales and he will be able to play with more freedom without that responsibility. "He did a fine job, but however difficult, it was time to change." Football 302 Cricket 340 M/Sport 360 General 380 Regions 390 Golf 350 RU News RU FFx RU Tabs Main Menu

Murray was ruled out of the opening game against Italy on February 5 after dislocating his shoulder in Edinburgh Reivers' Heineken Cup defeat last week. And further tests have forced Scottish Rugby Union physiotherapist Stephen Mutch to recommend surgery. Mutch said: "In view of Cammie's history of dislocation it's felt an early operation would be beneficial."
